Your SIL supports will be based on a Roster of Care which outlines the ratio of support you receive throughout the day and overnight. This ratio is based on your support needs and may be different at different times of the day or night. For example, you may need 1:1 supports to attend to personal care and medication, but 1:3 supports for other tasks. In many cases, your SIL supports will be shared with one or more other participants.
What does a SIL provider do?
SIL providers offer a service that will help you to live with greater independence in your own home. Support workers will assist you with a variety of activities based on your needs, that may include help or support with:
How does SIL work with SDA?
Your SIL supports will provide support workers to assist you with daily tasks that help you to develop your skills and live with greater independence. Your SDA provider is responsible for the dwelling you live in. You can be funded for SIL without being eligible for SDA, so it’s important to check your plan and see what funding is included before you start looking for an SDA provider. When you are funded for both, the funding is included separately in your NDIS plan so you have choice and control over the providers for each of these unique supports.
Some organisations offer both SIL and SDA supports to participants. You have the choice of whether you would like to receive these supports from the same company, or different ones.
Will my SIL provider help me find an SDA to live in?
Once you have SDA funding in your NDIS plan, you may need support to find an SDA to live in. In most cases, this support will be provided by your Support Coordinator or your friends and family. They will help you to understand what type of SDA you have been funded for, and to identify suitable providers.
You will have the choice to keep your current SIL provider when you move into an SDA or choose a new one.
What if there is a vacancy in my SIL or SDA supports?
When there is a vacancy in your SIL or SDA supports, the provider of these supports will usually advertise for a new person to share with you. They are not allowed to charge you more to cover the cost of the vacancy.
Your SIL and SDA providers should take your needs into account when searching for someone to fill the vacancy, so that your choice and control and personal needs are met.
